My 30 year old Kitchenaid retired and was replaced by the 6500 in my kitchen. This mixer is Powerful and so simple to use. In my first week of ownership I have mashed potatoes (to the delight of my husband), made bread dough and cake batter. All turned out beautifully. The coated attachments pop in the dishwasher for easy cleanup. I wouldn't change a thing. (And the candy apple red looks lovely on my counter).

Great mixer, quiet dc motor, tons of power. Wish Kitchenaid made a pouring shield for the 6qt glass bowl. Mixer came with the flex edge beater but even by adjusting the bowl height it doesn't reach the bottom of the bowl. All in all I would recommend it.

It's like my child. I love it despite its flaws
She cooks, I bake
8/30/2018
I've been in the food service industry for 15 years and my wife used to own restaurants, so we've been planning out our dream kitchen for a long time, and this was the stand mixer I settled on. I'm also a tinkerer, so I've had the unit apart a few times to diagnose and remedy some problems that I had encountered. After a year of rigorous use and troubleshooting, here's my verdict:
THE BAD:
The way to test the height calibration of your KitchenAid mixing bowl is with what they call the "dime test" (the standard paddle should be close enough to the bottom of the bowl that when a dime is placed inside, it is pushed a quarter of the way around the bowl every time the blade passes.) To avoid people adjusting the glass bowl too high and cracking it with the mixer blade, they have made it impossible for the glass bowls to adjust high enough to pass the dime test, forcing me to choose between using the glass bowl and scraping down the sides far too frequently or purchasing the metal version of the 6 quart bowl which can hug the beater blades appropriately. If you're going to market this product towards professionals, at least treat us like professionals.
Also, my unit made a persistent, rhythmic clicking sound. It sounded just like one of the front perpendicular spiral bevel gears had a burr that was clicking every time it meshed. After taking it apart, I discovered that it was nothing more than the unsecured metal collar around where you connect attachments pushing the bevel gear too far back. Sliding it forward before tightening the bolts almost entirely eliminated the noise. The slight imperfections that are expected when dealing with heavy cast metal parts bring me perfectly to...
THE GOOD:
Whether you're baking a couple loaves of bread or making a whole gaggle of cookies for Christmas or a bake sale, this thing delivers firm, consistent, reliable power. The included bowl was trash for smaller recipes, but that's not what this was made for. Besides, after spending a little extra to get a metal bowl, it is now precise enough to give me an even mix no matter if I'm doing 20 creme brulees or 2. Further, not only is the DC motor quieter on speed 10 then the lower tier AC motors are on speed 1, but this monster has power and it shows. It scoffs at even the most demanding doughs and batters. Pretzel batter is tough and thick enough to pave sidewalks with. The last time I made a batch of a couple dozen or so, the Pro 6500 didn't even break a sweat.
I had mentioned the concerning noise it made before. Any fears I had about shoddy craftsmanship were immediately abolished when I cracked this thing open. A Phillips screwdriver took off the top and an H15 star took apart the rest, and let me tell you, this thing is built to last. The beefy, all-metal, 90°, spiral bevel gears that drive the paddle are fed through beefy, all-metal, planetary reduction gears. The motor itself, a robust, brushed, permanent magnet motor bucks the current trend of using overengineered lightweight components in favor of a combination of machined and cast metal parts that are designed with reliability and longevity in mind. I feel confident that I can continue to put it through it's paces for the next 60 years and still be able to pass it down to my kids or grandkids. I waited a long time for my very own stand mixer, and I could not be happier with my decision.

I got the Artisan 5 quart for Christmas and after using it only a few times I knew I needed to upgrade. I couldn't have the mixer running for even 4-5 minutes to properly knead the bread (only one loaf!), it would over-heat and bounce off the counter. So we upgraded to the Professional 6500. I LOVE it!! It's quiet, it doesn't move! I can do larger volumes with no issues, it doesn't sound like it's going to break down. Plus, even though it's not a deal-breaker for me - the glass bowl is a nice feature. I am just a home backer, but already, I think I've had better results, being able to mix things per my recipes recommendations. It is bigger, so needs to live on the counter, but that I don't mind. It's pretty!!

Waiting for Replacement #4
Ann SR

I was looking forward to upgrading from my tilt head to a heavier duty mixer. This model has not been what I expected. First mixer had issue where the motor would consistently turn on-from the start, not because of over-heating. Second two have had bowl height issues-straight out of the box-and no amount of adjustment has worked...couldn't event make an egg yolk break! Last replacement also had an issue with the fit of the whisk. Wish I could exchange for a completely different model, but not able to.

New out of the box and broken
Icemanp90

I bought this new in 08/30/2016 from the Navy Exchange, just before moving from Guam. WE unpacked the 6Qt Bow-lift mixer and placed on the counter. My wife went to use it for the first time about a month ago. So, guess what happen….? That's right is worked for about 5 seconds and shuts off. Shut off restart and same thing runs for 5 second or there about and shuts off.
Looked through the internet and everyone said the same thing unit is bad and needs to be repaired.
I have been trying to get kitchen Aid service center in order to get the unit back for repair. This has been very frustrating. AS their service center times and response aren't very helpful. Not sure why though? It's not like they are going to cover the repair. Even though is didn't work right out of the box. I want everyone to be mindful of that point going forward. Check the unit as soon as you get it home. I wish, I had. Anyways this unit sucks and their customer support for repairs sucks as well. I would but it again, nor recommend it. It's really said though, I loved our old mixer from Kitchen Aid the 4Qt flip-top. We gave it to my wife's sister, when I upgrade to this unit. We just didn't have time to test it before moving.
Do note I'm giving it a low rating due to, 1. It didn't work out of the Box and 2. there customer service, website, and repair service are not very helpful or customer oriented.

The Biggest Disappointment!
biscuitchef

I received my first KitchenAid lift bowl stand mixer in 1992 as a gift for graduation from culinary school. I love it still. This new model I purchased for a kitchen remodel is just so far away from the original.
The worst part is the high pitched screeching sound of the motor. The most frequent reason you use a stand mixer is for handling jobs with longer mixing times. The sound of this thing is so grating it I have been opting to mix the egg whites by hand so I don't have to listen to the KitchenAid.
I will also echo the complaints by others that the paddle is really bad at mixing even remotely as well as past models. And in this century do you think the company could finally include a paddle that doesn't oxidize in the dishwasher and then tarnishing future recipes?!? Or maybe just include the rubber scraper paddle so that we can have one that works well from the outset instead of charging $50 to get the thing working right.
I worked part-time in retail and sold these in the store. As a retired chef, I was always fielding the questions on mixers. One of the most common complaints was the bowl removal for this line. I had to train really smart people on how to get the bowl on and off when they came in after purchasing the product. I didn't realize that bowl removal was the least of this lines problems when I bought one for myself.

I've had this for years and use many of the attachments. I make a lot of bread and cookies and appreciate the power. I also love the pasta attachments (and the accompanying recipes--try the minestrone soup with the fresh macaroni!). My only minor complaint is that I have to scrap the bowl--sides and bottom. I wish there was a scraper blade.

Overall, a great mixer and addition to my kitchen
Allybabra

I love my mixer! It has been a great tool that I try to use often in my kitchen. I've never had a stand mixer, so I don't have a lot to compare it to but I still give it a thumbs up. Firstly, the candy apple red is beautiful! Love it so much! Only cons sofar have been the glass bowl is very heavy and it could really use a pouring shield. Also in order to mix things properly, you have to have quite a bit of mixture in the bowl. In other words, if you don't have enough (or a small amount), it doesn't reach the bottom to mix ingredients. But I have made cakes, cookies, scrambled eggs etc...fun to use!

My husband bought me this mixer for my birthday, originally I was looking at the 5 quart model but after quite a bit of research he decided to spend the extra money and go with the more powerful 6 quart model, and I have to admit I'm very glad that he did. This model is wonderful and worked perfectly for all of my holiday baking- I was making double or triple quantity recipes and the mixer didn't have any issue with the additional volume or with the bread dough which can be hard on a mixer. Overall I'm VERY happy with my mixer!

Buyer Beware: Unexpected Issues
MDcantamia
1/3/2018
This is my third stand mixer. That known, it was important to be able to use my 6qt Pro mixer legacy bowls and attachments with this replacement model (which I bought because of the DC motor). In short, the wisk is very small and completely useless as there is no splash guard that fits this model. That also means that any speed higher than 4 is also useless as batters and dough fly out of the glass bowl using either paddle. My next clever move was to try the legacy stainless bowls and attachments - and thought they function perfectly - the bowl clip is shaped differently so the stainless bowls need a sturdy garden tool to pry the bowl out of position. After three wasted hours on the phone with KitchenAid, I am writing this review.

pros & cons

I bought this to replace my 15 y/o 6qt mixer that has been a gem over the years but started getting louder and squeaking with use. This new model is significantly quieter than my older model and I was amazed at the difference. I have only used it once, but there a couple of things that are not awesome. The glass bowl is seriously heavy. The lighter 6 qt metal bowl fits with this new model but I haven't tried it yet and think I will try it with my older model beaters as they are wider and will probably reach the wider sides of the metal bowl better. I had to scrape the sides and bottom of the glass bowl a few times while I was making lemon bars, so that was a little disappointing. When talking to the KitchenAid Rep over the phone when deciding on which model I wanted, I was told that 1) my older version metal 6 qt bowl would not fit and 2) my pouring/splash shield from my older 6 qt mixer would not fit. Both of these items fit this new model. So the question is, do you want the super quiet model or the newer model of the older design that seems to scrape the sides of the bowl better and has a lighter bowl? I am undecided if I made the right choice.

We've had this mixer for awhile now and it is the workhorse in our kitchen! We use it for everything from normal mixing to juicing tomato's to make homemade ketchup. I loved it so much I bought my Mom-in-law one for Christmas and she could make cookies again with ease (arthritis had made it almost impossible for her to hand mix very stiff dough that a smaller mixer couldn't handle but this one does it with ease!

I hate this mixer
Jolie
11/5/2017
My family gave me this mixer for christmas last year. I was so excited to use it and immediately started pulling out my favorite recipes. The first thing for which I used it was whipping egg whites---not bad---till I turned them out of the bowl and found the bits at the bottom that weren't incorporated in the whip. Okay...I did something wrong...so, I did it again. Same thing. Rats!
I moved on to banana bread, a family favorite. Fairly simple, average recipe, eggs, flour, two bananas, etc. Butter goes in at room temperature to cream with the sugar---easy right? It would be easy if the machine's highest speed was 30% faster! Or even if the beater actually reached the bottom and edges of the bowl...nope. Consequently, I have to stop the machine every thirty seconds to scrape down the sides and pull down the bowl to get under the beater and still didn't get the light-almost -white color that it should be. I hate this machine.

Hard-Working Beauty of a Mixer
8/13/2017
First off, I have to mention when we bought our KA mixer I discovered, while testing the beater to bowl clearance, that it was making a grinding noise which didn't seem normal to me as our previous KA mixer of 30+years didn't make the noise this mixer was making. Within the week, we took it back to the store, easily exchanged it for another and thankfully no weird noise. So, with the second mixer, I can say I am happy with our purchase. It works wonderfully so far, is a beauty in the Candy Apple Red and we have it proudly displayed on our kitchen counter. I only voted down a bit on the quality due to the first mixer not working properly. Am hoping to get many years of use out of this one just like my previous KA mixer.
